Portugal became an independent state in the 12th Century and was
a Kingdom until a revolution in 1910 drove King Manoel II into
exile and a Republic was declared. From 1932 a strong ,
repressive government was headed by Premier Antonio de Oliveira
Salazar. he retired in September 1968 and was succeeded by
Marcello Caetano. On April 25, 1974, the government was seized
by a military junta led by General Antonio de Spinola, who was
named President. Spinola reached agreements with many of
Portugal's colonies for independence, but was forced to resign on
September 30, 1974 by pressure from leftist generals. In April
1975, Communist influence in government increased and several
major industries, including banks and insurance companies were
nationalized. A counter-coup in December 1975 halted this shift
and the economy and political life continue to be in disarray.
